Transforming a Historic Landmark into an Accessible, Sustainable Cultural Hub for the Community

The refurbishment, reconfiguration and extension of the Grade II listed Vestry House Museum transformed a historic local landmark into a modern, accessible and sustainable cultural destination. The project delivered the client’s vision of revitalising the museum while preserving its heritage significance, creating enhanced exhibition spaces, learning facilities, creative workspaces and a new café overlooking the garden.

Works included the careful restoration and upgrade of the existing building fabric, with repairs to roofing, rainwater goods and timber structures, alongside thermal and fire performance improvements. Internal reconfiguration improved accessibility, circulation and the visitor experience, while a sympathetically designed extension provided additional accommodation and community facilities. Accessibility enhancements included a new platform lift and improved access throughout the building.

Working within a Grade II listed building required close collaboration between the project team, client and consultants to balance heritage requirements with modern standards. Practical Completion was achieved in May 2026, delivering a flexible community asset that supports cultural, educational and commercial activities while helping secure the museum’s long-term sustainability.

Social value was a key part of the project, with careers talks, mock interviews, site visits and work experience placements delivered in partnership with Waltham Forest College. Additional stakeholder tours, volunteering initiatives and educational activities helped create lasting benefits for the local community beyond the construction works.

This project demonstrates Borras Construction’s expertise in delivering complex heritage refurbishments that successfully combine conservation, accessibility and sustainability objectives.
