The original structure was partially destroyed during WWII, was partly rebuilt, with its East Wing converted in the 1960s to include a youth hostel and café. The main arcade now hosts ‘Opera Holland Park’ each summer.
We carried out extensive restoration of this Grade I listed building, including roof replacement, façade and stone balustrade repairs, window overhauls, and fire alarm installation. A key aspect was the careful ‘bird beak’ lime repointing of the East Elevation, preserving much of the original brickwork. This traditional Tudor technique, used to accommodate irregular bricks, maintained the building’s historic character.
The project was executed in two phases to accommodate the opera season and park visitors, requiring detailed planning, especially amid the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and public access to the site.
