Transforming a heritage estate into a vibrant community and events destination
In March 2021, the National Lottery Heritage Fund awarded Lambeth council a grant towards the restoration of the prestigious Brockwell Hall. The space was formerly used as a café, council offices and a park maintenance depot, with the majority of the building left unused and unappreciated.
The scheme sought to provide Lambeth with a multi-purpose facility, which included the addition of a new build community events space, with the capacity to seat 160 people. The new venue is of steel frame construction, complete with timber superstructure, and is located within the courtyard area.
The existing ‘main hall’ has been completely transformed, including extensive internal refurbishment such as new ironmongery, doors, sanitaryware, floorboards and detailed finishes including mouldings and wooden panelling to staircases. All MEP services were removed and reinstalled throughout. The refurbished spaces now provide a new café, first floor ceremonial place, restored picture room and various function rooms.
Externally, masonry and glazing repairs were undertaken, requiring scaffold access around the full perimeter of the building. Replacement sash windows were installed, in addition to multiple pitched roofing repairs.
Set aside from the main hall, a Grade II listed stable block has been refurbished as a variation to the original contract. Works included extensive brick, plaster and glazing and structural repairs as well as general redecoration throughout. Blockwork partitions were constructed, forming suitable accommodation for Lambeth staff, together with public WC facilities. Externally, an extensive landscaping package was undertaken, including disabled access ramps, tarmac resurfacing and paving.
