Helping Hounslow Community Foodbox grow

It is great to see that our donation and installation of new planters to Hounslow Community Foodbox has enabled them to expand the amount of produce they can grow.

For a number of years now, this worthy cause has developed and maintained a vegetable allotment at the heart of the Brickfield Estate in Brentford. It’s a resource which benefits both the local community and those suffering from food poverty within the borough.

It is thanks to the work of Martha, the lead gardener and volunteer, that the estate residents can now access this project located on their doorstep. The newly installed ‘knee-high’ beds will be of particular benefit to the elderly and those with disabilities, who, up until now, have struggled to become involved owing to the previous allotment space limitations.

In addition to existing services, the FoodBox has now partnered with ‘Cultivate London’, encouraging local schools to participate in food growing throughout 2024, providing them with valuable education regarding gardening practices and the importance of sustainability.

Martha says:

‘Having been involved with the allotment for seven years I really appreciate the advice and help with this project. I am so grateful to Borras Construction for these planters, which will enable local residents to participate actively and form stronger links within our community.’

The FoodBox is appealing for donations of seeds, plants or compost to get the season’s cultivation underway. Donations can be taken directly to the FoodBox at the Rose Community Centre in Brentford (Tuesday – Friday 10am – 1pm and Saturday 10am – 12pm), or alternatively, to one of their donation points at

  • ASDA – Hounslow
  • Morrisons – Brentford
  • Sainsbury’s Local – Isleworth.

Hounslow Community Foodbox collects food parcel donations at the Rose Community Centre in Brentford (TW8 8NT).
